and just this year the city was named the best host city in Africa according the World Travel Awards, ranked number one for ease of doing business according to the latest World Bank research, CNN named the Mother City as one of the worlds most beautiful cities and now the city has been named the greatest city on Earth by The Telegraph!
the newspaper asked their trusted readers to let them know what their favourite holiday destination was. Over 45,000 readers responded to the Telegraph Travel Awards survey and the South African city pipped Tokyo and Vancouver to the top spot.
*“It may require a long journey – it sits a precise 6,000 miles (9,600 kilometres) from London Heathrow – but it is not hard to understand why you picked Cape Town, yet again, as your favourite city for the sixth successive Telegraph Travel Awards.
South Africa’s most fabled place could never be described as a question mark – the brooding Table Mountain is too recognisable; the beach resorts of Camps Bay too enticing; the history which swirls around the metropolis, reaching its dark zenith on Robben Island, too absorbing.
But a destination does not need unknown charms when it can bask in the mid 20s Celsius as Europe is going through winter – and have the decency to do so just two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Throw in the city’s status as a gateway to the Cape wine lands and the road-trip joys of the Garden Route – and those 6,000 miles seem a hop and a skip.”*
– a firm favourite amongst Telegraph Travel readers. The rest of the top ten features familiar contenders, although there are a few notable power shifts.Tokyo has overtaken Vancouver to second place, a spot that Vancouver held for the five years prior.
